We are very much in the holiday spirit over here. It’s never too soon in my opinion. I am just so excited to see Otis experience the holidays this year. To watch his face light up is just going to make me the happiest mama ever. Let me also just say that Lola is a SAINT that she puts up with my photo requests and is so good with Otis. I recently got these pajamas in the mail which were matching plaid for Otis and Lola. Guys… it’s too cute!!! It led me to jump down the rabbit hole of holiday pajamas to see what else we needed for the season. I rounded up some of my favorites above. Some of which, we ordered and are patiently awaiting delivery! Click the image above to shop. One set that isn’t pictured is this adorable Christmas set from Clover Baby & Kids. It’s one of Otis’ favorite pajama brands. So soft and super lightweight which I love. I currently have a discount code for 20% off most items using code: OTIS. You can check out their website here. Another one of my favorite kids brands for pajamas and the best basics is 1212. They have a super chic modern holiday pj here that I can’t wait to scoop up. I also have a discount code of: EATSLEEPWEAR for 20% off. Check out there website here. Any other favorite kids pajama brands?? Let me know your favorites in the comments below!

Why You Should Consider Fasting & 4 Tips to Prepare for Your First Fast

By Ram Jain

People have been practicing fasting for many years for religious, spiritual or health reasons. Yogic philosophy also approves of fasting as a way to cleanse the body and to control both mind and body.

When you practice fasting you learn to control the senses and not to react on the tendency to eat food out of habit or routine.

Fasting allows the intestines to take a rest. They always work and because we keep eating, they never get to rest. While fasting, the intestines get the chance to digest all the food, to clean itself and to rest.

Fasting has always been a consistent part my lifestyle and has proven to be very beneficial, both physically and mentally.

Fasting can be done in many different ways. There are differences in length of fasting:

  • 1-day fast every week
  • 3-day fast every month
  • one week fast a few times a year
  • 10-day fast once a year or even several week fast

A 1-day fast is the best way for beginners to experience fasting for the first time and to see how the body reacts. Several weeks of fasting should never be done without experience and supervision.

There are also differences in types of fasting:

  • water fast (only drinking water)
  • juice fast (only drinking 2 glasses of fresh vegetable or fruit juice a day)
  • partial fast (excluding certain foods such as wheat, carbohydrates, dairy)

You can choose which type of fasting you want to do, depending on the situation and your experience. It is important that you always listen to your body and that you do it step by step. So don’t start with a 10-day water fast if you have never fasted before!

Remember: All of these fasts have the same goal: to give the body the opportunity to cleanse and detoxify itself.

For those who don’t have experience in fasting, here are four tips on how you can prepare yourself and how you can make your first fast a success:

  1. Be completely devoted

Fasting will be the most comfortable and beneficial if you are completely devoted to do it. Make sure you know why you want to do it (for health, spiritual or religious reason) and truly believe you are doing something good for your body. Only then your mind will calm down and accept it and you won’t crave for food so much.

  1. Eat light before you start fasting

Before you fast there should be a transition period where you eat less and light. This transition period is generally half of the fasting period. So if you do a 1-week fast, you should start eating light and less 3.5 days before. This way your body can already prepare itself and the transition from little to no food is easier than if you have a big heavy meal the evening before you start fasting the next day.

  1. Be prepared for some physical reaction

Each body reacts different to fasting, depending on the constitution of your body, your eating habits, your mental state, etc. Some people might feel weak, tired, get a headache, or have mood swings. Be prepared for some physical reaction but if the reaction is too strong and too uncomfortable, you should slowly stop the fasting and try a lighter form the next time. It is important to always keep listening to your body. The first times are usually the hardest, but it gets easier as your body gets more used to the fasting.

  1. Limit your physical activities

Try to plan your fasting period so that it fits in your personal lifestyle. Don’t start fasting in a very stressful period where you keep running here and there. If possible don’t do too many physically intensive activities. They can make your body more tired and make you feel weaker and hungrier. Those who are more used to fasting will have less problems with this.

Casual Patterns

Say hello to my new favorite dress. It’s one of those things that looks just ok online but when I finally got my order it was love. Honestly I have not always been a fan of super long dresses but lately, these longer midi dresses are the perfect length to rock with sneakers and still be able to chase around Otis and sit on the floor with him without flashing the world. Love the buttons at the top which also makes it a great breastfeeding friendly dress for my mamas out there. It’s funny because I haven’t worn these sneakers a ton since I bought them a while ago mostly because I didn’t like the fit on my feet. Let me explain. So I bought these on SUPER sale last cyber week because they are typically really pricey for a sneaker. But, I kept an eye on the sales and finally found a pair I could pull the trigger on. But when I got them, I just felt like my feet were really high up in the shoes and slipping out? I don’t know. I was pretty disappointed. Fast forward and I realize that the soles are actually platforms inside the sneakers! I had NO idea. So, what I did was grab the insoles to another pair of sneakers and pop them into these sneakers. PROBLEM SOLVED. Now I love them! So word to the wise… these sneakers have a platform insole. I have worn this exact look a few times since these photos because it’s just so good, easy, and just feels right. Love a good casual look with a little flair of pattern.

5 Foods to Incorporate into Your Yogic Diet

By Simone de Villiers

Travelling from Australia to India for my first 200hr yoga teacher training course, I felt nervous about my belly. So I drank all the kombucha before I left and stocked my bags with probiotics and Imodium to make sure I’d be able to cure any “Delhi Belly” I may encounter. Who knew that I was going to leave my school, Gyan Yog Breath in Rishikesh, feeling healthier (and fuller) than ever.

In the town of Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga, everything is vegetarian. Previously a meat-eater, I was uneasy about the idea of just eating veggies and carbs for a month. I thought that having a meatless diet would leave me less energetic than usual. But the total opposite happened. I noticed that my mood improved, I was less bloated, I slept better and I was more energized.

The school had chefs dedicated to feeding us two vegetarian meals each day that incorporated Ayurvedic ingredients. Each meal was freshly prepared with the intention of calming the functions of the mind and filling the body with life force energy, prana. They had taught us that the ideal yogic diet is one that does as little harm as possible and makes you feel good physically and emotionally.

Eating right is an essential activity for your yoga practice, so here are a few tips on the types of foods and Ayurvedic principles that you can bring to the table as a yogi.

  1. Fresh fruit and vegetables

Always try to prepare a fresh meal with fresh, locally sourced fruit and veggies. Be sure to take note of what foods are in season where you’re living. Having a healthy mix of vegetables and fruits in your diet gives you all the healthy antioxidants and immune boosting nutrients your body needs for your yoga practice.

  1. Herbal Teas

Herbal teas tend to contain herbs such as black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and turmeric, which all help boost the body’s immune system and improve metabolism.

Some popular ones to try before or after your practice are peppermint, chamomile, green, and ginger and lemon tea.

  1. Legumes and grains

Rice, chickpeas, lentils, beans, peas and so many more.

Legumes and grains are easy to digest and provide your body with a great source of protein alternative to meat.

4. Water

Hydration before, during and after yoga practice will make you perform better, increasing strength and flexibility. It is great for helping us to detox our bodies and provides us with the oxygen we need  to maintain clarity and focus throughout our practice.

5. All the spices like ginger, cumin, turmeric and fresh herbs

Herbs and spices directly support the mind and also make your food taste delicious. According to Ayurveda, spices act as healing foods that support a healthy body and stimulate its repair and rejuvenation.

Our nutrition works the same way as our asana practice, and it’s just as important. The same way that each of our individual practices differs, so do our dietary requirements and our individual idea’s about what is right and wrong when it comes to food. There is no specific diet that is suitable for all of us; however, incorporating the foods above will help to make you feel good, physically and emotionally. As long as you have a healthy relationship with food, and not overly restrictive in giving your body what it needs, your  mind, body and spirit can all positively function together.

DIY Kids Halloween 2019 / Dwight Schrute from The Office

Queue The Office theme song. One of my favorite Halloween Costumes to date. Because it combines my two favorite things: Otis + The Office. I shared this on instagram yesterday and what I found out was there we all share a cult love of this amazing show. So funny story on why we picked this costume. While I was pregnant, and even before I was pregnant, we would binge The Office from the pilot to the end of the season basically in a continuous loop. I swear Otis knows the theme song from the womb. We started having it on as background sometimes and Otis would drop everything he was doing to come run to the TV and dance to the theme song. Basically it melted my heart and I instantly knew we would have to do something to celebrate this joy for The Office. The button down shirt and tie were hard to find. It’s not as mustardy as I would have liked but shopping for a 1 year old size was harder than a larger toddler. This one is also a great yellow option. I also bought this shirt from carters that is pretty good even for smaller babies if you are looking to recreate this. I already had the pants and the oxford shoes but I needed the iconic glasses. I found the glasses on amazon and ordered them first. Basically everyday since I got them I put them on Otis’ face a few times a day to try to get him used to them. He usually would rip them off his face immediately but slowly he was able to keep them on for a minute with some distractions. By the time it came for these photos, I was shocked that he kept them on for a few minutes continuously. Of course because we had a little help from Baby Shark. That is why the phone is in the photos because Baby Shark was playing and it kept him busy. Bless that little shark!! Was super easy to use some pomade and part his hair in the middle. Is he not the perfect little Dwight Schrute?!?! Guys… it’s so cute. I love him so much. Hope you enjoy this as much as we do! Including links to his outfit below. Please send me pics or tag me on IG if you recreate this!

It has taken me 5 months to get to this blog post but I am going to go ahead and blame that on #momlife HA! We have gone on countless trips with Otis from when he was a newborn to 1 year old and I am finally compiling my tips for you for Hotel travel. The best you can do is to be prepared and overpack and then hope for the best! Excited to be sharing all the things I have used and loved and continue to use as we travel with Otis. You can find everything we have used at Walmart. I am excited to be partnering with them because they continue to be an incredible resource for everything baby. They seriously have all the best high end brands and it’s always a go-to for me to shop my diapers and formula with their fast shipping because many times my formula tends to sell out in stores so I always buy it online to stock up. In October, Walmart is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Parents Choice, Walmarts exclusive baby brand. I linked one of my favorite food time hack products below from this brand. It’s a MUST when traveling to hotels and eating out. Hope you enjoy this list! Have loved every single one of these products and still use many of them with my 1+ year old little man. If you have any more favorite, please share in the comments below.

Travel Crib: While this isn’t essential because most hotels will provide a crib, there is something about using a portable crib that you baby is used to. What I love so much about this one is it folds up really small and sets up in seconds. The sides are mesh, breathable and soft and we are still using it to this day with Otis when we travel. We don’t always fly with it if we know the hotel will have a crib or we are visiting family. It does fit in a large suitcase if you decided to bring it for the plane. It’s also small enough that it fits in most hotel bathrooms. This is our trick for giving baby their own room when you aren’t splurging for a larger hotel room. We set up our monitor and usually there are no windows so it’s already nice and dark.

Non-Wifi Baby Monitor: Specifically for hotel travel, you never know if the wifi will be good or bad. In most cases, the wifi signals are not the best. So we always travel with a non-wifi monitor to ensure we can keep an eye on Otis while he is sleeping. We have loved this one that came on a recommendation of my sister-in-law. It’s super reliable and that is what you want when it comes to a baby monitor.

Swaddle: When Otis was still in a swaddle, we always packed it with us since he was swaddled everytime he slept before he was rolling. It’s an easy thing to forget when your packing so make sure to include it to recreate your baby’s sleep environment on the go. We loved this swaddle since it was a version of what we were using in our bassinet.

Sleep sack: This is another essential that can be easily forgotten to pack along. We use a sleep sack every night for sleep and this also keeps Otis warm enough. I always get a ton of questions on my sleepsacks and what I love about this one is that it’s made of muslin cotton so it’s soft and light weight and not too heavy. This sleepsack comes in heavier fabrics like this for winter and also these swaddled versions for younger babies which we also used.

Travel Sound Machine: I feel like I have gushed about this thing so often but it’s truly that good. We have 2 of them and they are a MUST have for traveling. This portable sound machine has multiple kinds of white noise, ocean noise etc as well as different volume levels. We easily hook it onto the travel crib or lay it on the floor next to the travel crib now that he is older and can grab it. You can easily charge it with a usb cord or wall outlet. It’s small but mighty and by far my favorite travel sound machine. Blake tried to buy a cheaper one at some point and it sucked and he went back to this one.

Dockatot: This is more of a newborn item but this was a must for hotel travel when Otis was little. Since we used the Snoo at home as our bassinet, the dockatot was amazing for naps at home and traveling. Always ask your doctor about safe baby sleep practices but we used the dockatot in hotels and it was a lifesaver to have a safe place for baby that he was already used to using at home. It also fits inside the bassinet of our stroller so we had a lot of places to use it. I recommend the travel bag too which is super convenient with the travel handles to sling over your shoulder.

playmat: A playmat was something we always stuffed into our suitcase when Otis was a newborn. It’s always great to have your own clean surface for baby to have tummy time or playtime and I always love the skiphop stuff.

Books: Books are a big part of our bedtime routine so we always pack at least 3 with us since they don’t take up too much space in our suitcase. This, this and this are some of our current favorites.

Portable Blackout Window Blinds: I only recently found out these existed but I bought one because there is nothing worse than finding out your hotel (or friends house) doesn’t have black out blinds when your baby is used to sleeping in complete darkness. Epic invention for people traveling with little ones.

Bottles: We used these and these bottles the most with Otis. We always brought multiple with us.

On-the-go drying rack with bottle brush: This thing is amazing. We bring it every time with us and what I love if that the brush folds up inside and the rack is super convenient for either bottles, or breast pump parts.

Formula: I always pack formula on the go so this is especially important while we are traveling. We use this formula and these containers to portion it out on the go in my diaper bag.

Snack cup: We use this snack cup to use while we are traveling and at our destinations. It keeps Otis busy before we get a meal since he has to put his little hands inside to reach for his snacks. It’s easy to put this in our stroller when roaming a hotel property also so we can give him snacks in his stroller.

Pouches: I always have pouches on hand even though Otis feeds himself whole foods. You never know when you will be on the go and having something nutritious to eat quickly is always so helpful. I like the shelf stable pouches since I don’t have to refrigerate them while staying at a hotel.

Yogurt melts: One of Otis’ favorite snacks to keep in our diaper bag at hotels. He now sees this bag and freaks out because he’s so excited for these.

Disposable adhesive placemats: These have come in handy for going out to eat at the hotel restaurants. We used these more when Otis was smaller and just learning to self feed himself. Once he got older we switched to silicone plates that stick to the table.

Ezpz food mats: This is something we have been using since Otis has been a bit older on the go but it’s a great tool for both at home and travel. What’s great about these silicone plates is that they grip to the table so it makes it harder for Otis to throw the plate off the table. It’s small enough to fit inside my diaper bag which makes its a great option to travel with.

Health Kit: We always travel with our health essentials for Otis. I bring medicines (tylenol, motrin, and benadryl), bandaids, thermometer, cortisone cream, aquaphor, and diaper cream

Blowup bathtub: This travel inflatable bathtub is adorable. We got it and what is great is it folds nicely inside your suitcase and it’s just so damn cute. Otis has fun splashing in it! Alot of hotels will supply baby tubs if you ask but this is a great option if they don’t.

Travel size shampoo and lotion: Lots of hotels will supply baby amenities but I always bring Otis’ travel size toiletries. Babies can have such sensitive skin so I love to keep everything the same as home to make sure his skin is happy.

Baby carrier: We used this one alot when Otis was a newborn. It really made exploring the property at hotels easier to baby wear Otis and help him take a nap on me (or Blake) while we were still enjoying our day and not stuck in the room. Being hands free is a gamechanger.

Diapers: This goes without saying but you HAVE to stock up on diapers for a hotel trip. I always pack way more than we need to ensure we don’t run out. For the newborn stage we loved these diapers and now we are using a combo of these, these, and then these overnight diapers.

Beach Fall

I still have so many Summery dresses to wear and love mixing them with knits to make them more fall appropriate. I don’t alway wear bright colors but I love that the sweater and hat give the look a neutral base. I secretly love these foggy mornings that have a chill in the air. Also, this sweater is a few seasons old but always such a staple in my closet. Cashmere is one of those pieces in your closet that will always be a good investment.

Oversized Plaid

Nothing beats an oversized blazer and I the fit of this one is incredible. This one is the perfect weight to be worn as a light jacket and you can still layer up underneath. I am wearing a tank top underneath because it’s still been warmer where I live but you can easily slip a lightweight sweater underneath to layer up for a chillier day. I also have been refreshing some of my denim pieces and have been craving gray jeans. They are such a nice neutral that match with everything. This are cropped and look great with ankle boots or a heel. I am excited to have my family in town starting Friday!! Look forward to playing tourist in my own town for the week.

OTIS + THE PUMPKIN PATCH – 1 YEAR OLD

Last week we made our annual trip to the pumpkin patch. We always love Tanaka Farms in Irvine and went right before sunset when the place was almost empty. Last year, Otis was SO tiny and the trip was more for us. Looking back at those photos I am just melting over his tiny little legs touching those pumpkins! This year, since Otis is walking, we knew he would have a blast walking around. We tried to get his photo next to the height sign but as you can see, he was GONE and sprinting up the corn field instead of standing still. He is a little man on the move. It was also the first day wearing his big boy vans and was so cute watching him stomp around the dirt. I feel like the pumpkin patch with kids is always filled with lots of laughs. He was running through the vines and tumbling down because his little feet would get caught and because it was uneven but he didn’t care. He kept right on trucking through. He just wanted to explore. Of course we grabbed him for photos and he didn’t want any part of it. Was like wrangling a mini alligator. But we just went with the flow and explored with him. We also got to do a tractor ride which was fun! As you can see, our time at the pumpkin patch ended in a little meltdown. It was the sign that, it was time to go home and make dinner. Gotta remember those little moments of real parenting. It’s sometimes a little messy but ALWAYS worth it for the family memories. Otis got to pick his own little pumpkin and I brought the one home we found in the pumpkin patch. He looks at them everyday and points. This trip to the pumpkin patch always kicks off fall and gets our whole family excited for the holidays. We came home and Blake put on Christmas music and I had to do a double take. I asked him, “Is this Christmas music??” and he replied, “YES! I am in the holiday spirit now.” MELT ME TO THE FLOOR MY HUSBAND IS MY HERO. Hope you enjoy these little moments from our family and that you enjoy them with your own. I also wanted to share some tips with you on prepping for your family Pumpkin Patch photos. Keep reading below.

HOW TO PREP FOR PUMPKIN PATCH FAMILY PHOTOS

MATCH YOUR OUTFITS, BUT NOT PERFECTLY

Sure you can go in twinning outfits but the reality is we can’t always find twinning options especially for Mama and Baby Boys! Such a bummer but that doesn’t mean you can’t match together. What I did this day was ran to h&m to see what I could find since I didn’t have anything for Otis to wear. I wanted him in something fall and I found this button down and immediately grabbed it. So you pick one main piece and then match everyone else’s looks around that. So since Otis was wearing warm brown plaid print, I made sure to pull in the warm tones with my yellow top and kept Blake’s t-shirt neutral to blend in with ours. Since Otis was wearing grey jeans, Blake and I also wore shades of grey jeans. It actually looks better when the colors are varied and then you get this magical ombre and vibe of colors that magically work together. So you aren’t perfectly matchy matchy and more sharing a color family.

BE PREPARED: WITH SNACKS OR MILK

This might seem like a no brainer but you never know how long you will be at the pumpkin patch and having a snack or milk (whatever your baby/toddler’s vibe is) can come in handy when you need to take a break from the pumpkins. This will keep them happy and willing to put up with mom and dad’s photo requests.

GO DURING THE WEEK

I know it’s not always possible with parents work schedules but if you are able to slip out an hour early, going during the week at the end of the day can be some of the least crowded times to be at the pumpkin patch. We went on a weekday right before they closed and it was virtually empty. We were literally the last people leaving the farm. The last people. It made orchestrating photos easy and we were able to explore without massive crowds. If you have no choice and need to go on the weekend, go EARLY. When they open! Try to beat the crowds.

WEAR SENSIBLE SHOES. SERIOUSLY.

I feel like this is pretty obvious but it’s easy to get excited and dress up for some family photos and lose sight of the fact that you will literally be walking through vines. Wear boots or sneakers since it’s often dusty and dirty since you are walking through dirty and you never know if it might be wet and sludgy where you live. We all wore sneakers so we could chase around Otis.

BRING A FRIEND, OR A PHOTOGRAPHER

We hired our photographer and friend to take our family photos because it makes life SO easy when she can follow us around and snap away and we don’t need to worry about it. I know this is not a luxury for everyone. So! Plan a pumpkin patch date with some family or friends. This is great way to get a built in person to snap some photos of your family. Snap ALOT because it’s always easier to delete the bad ones than worry you didn’t snap enough.

MELTDOWN? NO PROBLEM.

Let’s be super honest, even the most angelic child has their moments. A trip to the pumpkin patch can be an overwhelming experience for some, and no big deal for others. And even the most go with the flow kids have their moments if you try to get them to stand too still for a photo (hello Otis is raising his hand for this one!) Just go with the flow and laugh it off because you are freaking awesome parents for adventuring out and creating memories together. Even if the only photo you have is one of your kid screaming at the patch, you know what, slap that into your photo album and call it a day.

Hope you all have the best time this fall! We are headed to another pumpkin patch this weekend that we have never been before! Can’t wait to report back.
